Sidney Brown, age 90, died at home on June 3, 2010 in Santee after a brief illness. He is remembered by friends and family as a fun-loving and friendly guy. Most important, he was respected for his compassion for those in need.
Sidney (Sid) was born in Jamaica, NY. He was the youngest son of Jewish immigrants. His father Solomon started Regina Furs in 1907. Sid caddied at Long Island golf courses, which lead to a lifelong love of the sport. He graduated from Jamaica High School in 1938 where he achieved “All-City” honors in football.
Sid served in the U.S. Coast Guard and met Christine Padgett of Goldsboro, NC, while on leave and married her during the war. Sid and Christine raised their family in Floral Park and ran Regina Furs. Sid pursued his love of sports by refereeing high school and college football and lacrosse.
In 1982 they moved to the Santee Cooper Resort. Sid and Christine were active fundraisers for charities. After Christine’s death in 1995, Sid continued to raise funds for the Santee Volunteer Fire Department. He is survived by son Walter (Ann) of Amherst, NY; daughter Carol Kohn-Mannis (Richard) of Las Vegas, NV; sister Beatrice Levine of Hicksville; and grandchildren, Natasha Kohn, Sarah and Benjamin Brown; and his beloved Dorothy of Santee.
The family welcomes friends at Clark’s Inn, Santee, on June 19 from 2 to 4 p.m. Donations may be made in his memory to the Santee Fire Department Development Board (SFDDB), P.O. Box 6, Santee, SC 29142. A private memorial service will be held by the family.
