Christine Turner was once again appointed and sworn-in as president of the Herricks School Board at its recent Reorganizational Meeting.
Christine Turner, has been on the Herricks school board for the last 20 years, having been first elected in 1990. In that time she has been vice-president of the board eight times and president of the board six times.
Richard Buckley, who was not present at the meeting, was appointed vice-president. He will be given his oath of office at the next meeting.
Both trustee Paul Ehrbar and Dr. Sanjay Jain were also sworn into office, as well, at the beginning of the meeting.
School to Start on September 7, Day After Labor Day
The board announced that the Herricks School District will return to classes for both teachers and students on the Tuesday after Labor Day, which is September 7. School will be open on September 8 but will close on September 9 and 10 for Rosh Hashanah and will reopen on September 13.
Joan Keegan Appointed Assistant Principal of the Middle School
Due to the retirement of Andrew Kover, as assistant principal of the Middle School, Joan Keegan, who is currently the assistant principal of the high school, has been appointed assistant principal of the Middle School.
Jaspan Schlesinger, LLP Appointed as Interim Attorney
The board voted to appoint Jaspan Schlesinger, LLP, as interim attorney pending further discussion. At first the board tabled the item, but then decided to appoint them on an interim basis.
Bond counsel of Hawkins, Delafield and Wood were appointed for Tax Anticipation Notes.
Fiscal advisors appointed for the tax anticipation notes is the firm of New York Municipal Advisors Corporation.
Dr. Bagdid Baghdassarian (Dr. Bags) was reappointed as the chief school physican at an annual retainer of $6,000, for his consultation with the district in a variety of student and employee health and medical issues. Plus a fee for each athletic physical he performs. This year he increased his fee for supervising football games from $150 to $175 per game.
R.S. Abrams & Co. was appointed as district auditor at a fee not to exceed $40,300. (last year’s fee was $39,200)
Pappas and Company was appointed as Internal Auditor at a fee not to exceed $24,000, the same fee as last year.
Nawrocki Smith LLP was appointed to the position of Internal Claims Auditor at a fee not to exceed $36,000, the same fee as last year.
Donald Barton was appointed as Registar for the Herricks School District.
Trustee Peter Grisafi was appointed parliamentarian.
The superintendent of schools and/or the president of the board of education were authorized to sign applications for approved ESEA Title I and other Federal chapter programs to which the district is entitled by Federal Law.
The board of education designated the superintendent of schools to make final determinations of resideny pursurant to Commssioner’s Regulation 8 NYCRR 100.2 9 (y) in connection with student entitlement to attend the district’s schools.
All the schools were given petty cash amounts of $100 to be administered by the school principal. The office of the board of education was also given petty cash of $100 administered by Judith Miehling and the transportation office, under the direction of John Conklin was given petty cash in the amount of $50.
Trustee Paul Ehrbar was appointed as the representative of the BOCES Budget Advisory Committee.
The board named the volunteer parent members of the Committee on Special Education.
President Turner wanted to know if parents could be on that board even though their children were no longer attending the school. It was thought they could, but it will be researched.
Other Designations
The official newspapers appointed by district are: Newsday, The Illustrated News. The Williston Times and The Herald Courier.
The board took time out to sign the Code of Ethics.
Because there was no request for it the board voted not to offer a school breakfast program for the coming school year.
The board then adjourned the Reorganizational Meeting and Opened the Regular School Board Meeting.
Board Approves School Board Calendar
The school board then approved and adopted calendar for board of education meetings from now until next June 16, 2011. The board established that the date of the building tour is Sept. 2.
The next meeting will be held on July 22, 2010 and it will be a regular meeting at the community center and then at the Aug. 12 meeting the tax levy will be set. A regular meeting will be held on Sept. 2 and Sept. 16 and Oct. 7 all at the community center at 7:15 p.m. The Oct. 21 meeting will be held at the Searingtown School.
New Policy for Herricks Computers
In compliance with a regulation issued by the New York State Comptroller’s office when teachers and staff at all Herricks schools log into their computers they will receive a message asking if they comply with all regulations.
In addition all teachers and staff are required to change their passwords every 90 days, which everyone agreed, could be a problem if anyone forgets their most recent password.
