We received a letter to the editor in which the writer asked to be signed “resident”. While it is against our policy to print anonymous letters, in this case we considered it. On second thought we believe the letter should be signed, “Unanimous” as opposed to “Anonymous”. It is all of us saying this to the Oyster Bay Town Hall regime.
We have asked over and over for them to address the question of parking behind Town Hall. The response has always been “a cold shoulder.”
The resident wrote:
“There is nothing more relevent to downtown Oyster Bay as the parking. As I drove through Oyster Bay today, December 28th, I noticed so many available parking spaces. The issue- they’re reserved. It’s my opinion that NO ONE should have a reserved space in Oyster Bay, EXCEPT the handicapped. It should be first come, first served.
“That way, if a town employee is away, sick, or just not there- those spaces would be available to those wishing to shop or eat in town. If they are out and come back- they’ll have the same consideration and parking choices as anyone else.
“On a day like today, when many spots are filled with snow, it would have been nice to have been able to park in those many empty spaces. It’s a disgrace that these spaces are reserved for anyone. Only the handicapped deserve a reserved space.”
The writer added later in a post script: “The sad fact is— if I can’t park, I go somewhere else.”
So there we are again. Here is a question that needs to be solved. Resident after resident experiences the same problem, the same feelings and often the same solution.
The answer is there: give the parkers an even chance.
