Sixth-Grade Recreation Night
The Garden City Recreation Department is sponsoring a Middle School Rec. Night for sixth-graders on the following dates at St. Paul’s Field House: Friday, Jan. 14. These parties will be chaperoned by the Recreation staff and will run from 7-9 p.m.
Admission is $5. A DJ will provide music and refreshments will be available for a nominal charge. The gym will be open for basketball, volleyball, dancing and other games. Note: Once the children are in our facility for either of these programs, they will not be allowed to leave unless accompanied by an adult. Please come into the building to pick up your child.
Family Fun Time on Sundays
On Sunday afternoons beginning Jan. 9, the St. Paul’s Field House will be open for “Family Fun” for village families. This open time provides the opportunity for families to enjoy various gym activities in an indoor environment. The gym will be available for use from noon to 3:30 p.m. each Sunday until March. This time is designated for family time only. No organized practices or workouts will be allowed. Although there will be staff to monitor activity, this is not a drop off program. We ask the elementary- aged children be accompanied by an adult. For the safety of our users, no lacrosse or baseball will be allowed.
Additional Sessions of Mad Science Program Added
Due to an increase in popularity, we have added two new dates for “Mad Science.” Mad Science is a one-hour after school program that incorporates various topics such as Ph, working in a lab, and dry ice into fun workshops but will entertain while educating. All classes are held at St. Paul’s Senior Center and run for six weeks. The cost for this program is $95. The schedule of classes is:
Kindergarten to Grade Two: Wednesday at 4 p.m.
Grades Three to Five: Thursday at 4 p.m.

Youth Tennis Instruction Began January 3
The Recreation Department is pleased to announce the start of registration for our Winter 2011 Indoor Tennis Program for Children at the Community Park Tennis Center. The lesson plan creates a fun learning experience with all ages and levels in mind. Registration has been ongoing and space is limited. Classes started the week of Jan. 3. Zumba and Adult Ballet Classes Now Registering
The following dance and exercise classes for adults will be offered by the Recreation Department:
Ballet Tuesdays at 9:15 a.m., 12 weeks $108
Zumba Tuesdays at 7:45 p.m., 12 weeks $108
Zumba Thursdays at 9:15 a.m., 12 weeks $108
Zumba Saturdays at 9 a.m., 10 weeks $90
All classes are led by Felicia Lovaglio, director of the Dance Conservatory and adjunct professor at Adelphi. Each class is one hour long and will be held in Cluett Hall. All classes begin the week of Jan. 11. Peewee Sports Sampler – Now Registering
The Garden City Recreation Department will once again offer our very popular Pee-Wee All Sports Sampler program this winter for children, ages 4 and 5, who are residents of the Inc. Village of Garden City. This six-week program will begin the week of Jan. 12 and has been designed to provide an opportunity to try a wide variety of sports with basic instruction. This program will run for 55 minutes and will be an instructional, incorporating new skills and free play in a non-competitive atmosphere.
It will be held in the St. Paul’s Field House according to the following schedule:
Thursdays at 10:30 a.m.
Thursdays at 1:15 p.m.
The cost of this program is $75. To register for this program, please fill out the registration form and submit with payment to the Garden City Recreation Department at 108 Rockaway Avenue. For additional information please contact the Recreation Office at 465-4075.
Preschool Arts and Crafts Classes Now Forming
The Recreation Department will begin its first session of Preschool Arts and Crafts the week of Jan. 11. This six-week program is held at St. Paul’s Cluett Hall and is open to children ages 3-1/2 to 5 years old who are residents of the Inc. Village of Garden City.
Children interested in this program may register for either Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday at 12:30 p.m. The cost of each 45-minute, six-week session is $30.
The child registering must be 3-1/2 by the start of the class in order to register for a session. To register, visit the Recreation Office at 108 Rockaway Avenue.
Second Session of Adult Yoga Now Registering
It’s time to register for our very popular adult yoga classes, which will begin in January. Connie McKnight, our certified yoga instructor, has designed adult yoga classes with all ages in mind. Each class is one hour long. All classes are held in Cluett Hall at St. Paul’s and began the week of Jan. 3. Any resident of the Inc. Village of Garden City is invited to join these relaxing classes.
The course schedule is as follows:
Mondays at 7:30 p.m. beginning Jan. 3: 12 classes for $72
Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m. beginning Jan. 5: 13 classes for $78

Children’s Winter Yoga Now Registering
Connie McKnight, a certified yoga instructor, has designed yoga classes with children’s abilities in mind. Each class runs for 55 minutes. All classes are held in Cluett Hall at St. Paul’s and began the week of Jan. 3. Any resident of the Inc. Village of Garden City, ages 6-18, is invited to join these relaxing classes.

Ages 10-18 Fridays at 6:45 p.m. beginning Jan. 7: 12 classes for $72

Open Gym for Middle/High Schoolers
The Field House will be open beginning Tuesday, Dec. 7 for grades six–12 from 3:30 to 6 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursday for basketball and volleyball. The Field House will be monitored but no organized activities will be scheduled. This time is for students to play with their friends in a supervised setting. No organized practices and no adults will be allowed in the gym at this time.
Tennis Ultimate Workout for Adults
The Recreation Department also offers a tennis workout program at Community Park Tennis Facility that drills experienced tennis players. This 1-1/2 hour class is available on Saturday mornings at 10 a.m. at a cost of $249. The program runs for nine weeks. To register for this great workout, visit the Recreation Office at 108 Rockaway Ave. Payment must accompany registration.
Adult Basketball on Saturdays
Beginning Saturday Dec. 4, the Recreation Department will again offer adult basketball in the Middle School’s South Gym from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. This free program is open to residents who have graduated high school and older. Proof of residency is required. Games are in “pick-up” format and the sessions are monitored by Rich Anderson. This program will run until Feb. 19.
Winter Floor Hockey
The Garden City Recreation Department is proud to announce it will once again offer a Floor Hockey Program this winter at Field House at St. Paul’s. The program will be open to village residents between the ages of 5-14 on select Fridays according to the following schedule:
Ages 5-7: 6:15 to 7:15 p.m.
Ages 8-10: 7:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Ages 11-14: 7:30 to 8:30 p.m.
On the following dates: Jan. 21; and Feb. 4, 18.
The cost of this program will be $25. All participants are required to wear the following equipment at all times: Hockey Helmet with a cage, hockey gloves, shin pads, sneakers, and hockey stick.
