Book Talk, Signing by New Hyde Park’s Gerry Laytin

On Saturday, Jan. 15 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Gerry Laytin,  of New Hyde Park, Major Accounts Manager for Anton Community Newspapers, and co-author of Killer Secrets of Successful Entrepreneurs will give a book talk and sign copies in the Center Court of Broadway Mall in Hicksville.  Twenty-five percent of book sale profits will be donated to The Family & Children Association, a nonprofit organization that shelters, protects, counsels, and supports Long Islanders in crisis. Holy Spirit to Offer Defensive Driving Course

The Church of the Holy Spirit, 500 Jericho Turnpike, New Hyde Park, is offering a Defensive Driving Course, sponsored by the National Safety Council.  The hours are from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.  The cost is $45.  With this course participants will receive a 10 percent reduction in the liability and collisions portion of their insurance premiums and it will also remove up to four points from their driving record.  Further, it is hoped that the information gain will help prevent collisions.  For further information and registration, please call (631) 360-9720.

Martin Luther King Day

Dreaming with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at LICM on Jan. 17 at 1 p.m.  Come join the folks at the Long Island Children’s Museum and explore the remarkable life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Draw inspiration from the life, speeches and visions of one of the nation’s most historic leaders as you produce a painting of peace to celebrate the day. Ages: 5 and up. Fee: $3 with museum admission ($2 LICM members).  The museum is located at 11 Davis Avenue, Garden City.  The museum will be open on January 17 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Museum admission: $10 for adults and children over 1 year old, $9 seniors, free to museum members and children under 1 year old. Additional fees for theater and special programs may apply. Herricks Community Players to Hold Auditions for Crazy For You

The Herricks Community Players will hold auditions for the George and Ira Gershwin’s musical comedy Crazy for You on Jan. 18, 19, 20 with call backs on Jan. 24 at 7 p.m. at the Herricks Community Center, 999 Herricks Road, New Hyde Park. Please come prepared with 16 bars of music and for  tap and please bring dance shoes.  All roles are open including lead dancers, singers, actors and ensemble. North Lakeville/Lakeville Estates Civic Associations to Meet

Spinner’s Grinners” Laughter Yoga – No Membership Required

Take time to participate in a series of laughter, breathing and playfulness exercises with many, many health benefits.  You don’t have to be happy, you don’t have to be funny, you don’t even need a sense of humor!   Everyone can do this!  No joke!  We will not be laying on the floor and no knowledge of yoga is necessary.  All activities are done either sitting or standing.  We meet twice per month, on a Wednesday night (for approx. 1 hr, 10 min.).    Meeting starts at 7:30 p.m. sharp.  Ages:  13-80.  Effective, 1/1/11:  Admission fee:  only $5 per meeting. Superintendent Jon Kaiman to Deliver State of Town Address

Having led the Town through one of the most persistent recessions in recent memory while holding the line on taxes, avoiding layoffs and maintaining the level of services residents have become accustomed to, Supervisor Jon Kaiman is preparing to deliver his annual State of the Town address, confident in his administration’s ability to meet the challenges ahead.The public is invited to join the Supervisor and other North Hempstead elected officials Jan. 26 at the clubhouse at Harbor Links Golf Course in Port Washington where he will reflect on the administration’s accomplishments over the past year and outline key goals and priorities going forward.The public is invited to attend the address, sponsored by the League of Women Voters, at 1:15 p.m., free of charge.  
Guests who plan to attend the full program, which includes lunch, are required to register by Jan. 20. The $35 luncheon will begin at 11:30 a.m.

Elk/Doe Clubs to Hold Night at the Races

Friends of Hillside Library to Hold Valentine’s Tea

The All-Purpose room of Hillside Public Library  will be the setting for the Fourth Annual Valentines’ Tea sponsored by The Friends of Hillside Public Library, on Sunday February 6 from 12:30 to 3 p.m. The cost is $15 per person and includes, tea, scones, sandwiches and dessert.  Raffles will be available.  Please bring your prettiest teacup.  Seating is limited, to secure your reservation, please respond by January 26.   Reservation forms are available at Hillside Public Library.  This is an “adults only” activity.
