Polar Plunge at North Hempstead Beach Park
Special Olympics New York will be hosting its 7th Annual North Hempstead Beach Park Polar Plunge fundraiser on March 5, sponsored by the Town of North Hempstead. Polar Plunge is the premier pledge based fundraising event statewide for Special Olympics New York, and allows them to provide year round sports training and competition for over 48,000 athletes with intellectual disabilities. The plunge will take place at North Hempstead Beach Park in Port Washington. Polar Plunge is a unique pledge event that has become the premier annual fundraiser of Special Olympics New York. Participants raise money for the athletes of Special Olympics New York by asking family, friends, co-workers, etc. to support their efforts in “Freezin’ For A Reason.” Then, take the plunge into the chilly waters. Every Plunger that raises $100 receives an official Plunge sweatshirt, raise more money and receive more great prizes. Plungers can create their own Plunge Web Page so that friends, family and co-workers can visit and donate right online. More than 6,000 plungers and 15,000 spectators were a part of the 2009-2010 Plunge Season, raising nearly $1 million statewide.
Sophisticated Singles to Meet

Defensive Driving Course at Holy Spirit in New Hyde Park
The church of the Holy Spirit, 500 Jericho Turnpike, New Hyde Park, is offering a Defensive Driving Course sponsored by the National Safety Council. The hours will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and the cost is $45. With the course participants will receive a 10 percent reduction in the liability and collisions portions of their insurance premium. It will also remove up to four points from their driving record. Hopefully, the information gained will help prevent collisions. Planting and Maintaining Trees and Shrubs at Clark Garden
At 1 p.m. at Clark Garden, 193 I. U. Willets Road, Albertson will hold a Fireside Chat by John Deignan on how to plant and maintain trees and shrubs. Beginning with tips for properly selecting plants from nurseries, the talk will progress with site selection, soil preparation, transplanting and drainage issues. Important tasks from watering, mulching, staking pruning and fertilization to insect and disease control will be covered in order to provide professionals and hobbyists with knowledge to ensure that their trees and shrubs flourish and thrive. Root Pruning Workshop
The Bonsai Society of Greater New York, Inc. will host a Root Pruning Workshop at 8 p.m. at Farmingdale College Greenhouse. Resident bonsai artist Vincent Russo Jr. will lead participants through the process of inspecting bonsai for being in a ‘root bound’ condition, and then lead everyone through the process of removing the correct amount of soil and roots and refreshing the planting. These techniques are appropriate for houseplants as well as bonsai. Please bring a sturdy pair of chopsticks, and a temperate bonsai or a pot bound/root bound houseplant that has been in its container for at least one year. Soils and instruction will be provided.
