Girls Track and Field National Champs
I would like to offer congratulations on behalf of the board of trustees to the Garden City Girls’ Track and Field Team for being named “National Champs.” The 4 x 400 Sprint Medley Relay Team of Alexis Yeboah-Kodie, Taylor Henning, Taryn Schmelzinger and Emma Gallagher placed first in 4:04.17. Special thanks also to Head Coach Erica Frogosi and her Assistant Coaches Arthur Johnson and Tom Skrivanek Lucas for guiding them to a successful, winning season.

The village board of trustees also joins me in extending congratulations to Coach Anthony Sparacia and the Garden City High School Girls Basketball Team on their victory at the Class A Girls Basketball Southeast Regional Final last Friday. We wish them best wishes today in the New York State semi-final game at Hudson Valley CC.
Village-Wide Election: Congratulations
Congratulations to newly elected Mayor Donald T. Brudie, Trustees Andrew J. Cavanaugh, Laurence J. Quinn, Dennis C. Donnelly and Trustee-Elect John A. DeMaro on their election last Tuesday. It is gratifying to note that the affairs of our Village are in such capable hands.
I also want to express gratitude to the more than 2,600 residents who made the time to vote in the annual village election and I encourage you to stay engaged and involved with village activities and your property owners’ associations and to become involved with it. I know trustee decisions will never be supported by 100 percent of the residents 100 percent of the time, but I believe Tuesday’s vote substantiates that residents are confident they want to see the Community Agreement form of governing and the election process to continue.
The four property owners’ associations are organized according to geographic locations within the village and are the root of Garden City’s Community Agreement form of government. The Community Agreement was designed to provide equal representation within village government and school district boards to each of the sections that the Community Agreement created. Participation in the property owners’ associations is the best way residents can learn about village affairs, contribute their point of view and volunteer their services to the community. Through the years, the property owners’ associations have been the entities that have cultivated Garden City’s long line of talented and dedicated elected officials. Pot Hole Repairs
I am sure we are all hopeful that the threat of another ice and snow event is remote and that it will not be necessary to plow and spread a sand/salt mix over the 74 miles of village-owned streets and the 64.62 acres of municipal parking fields. The Department of Public Works Street Division is currently focused on repairing potholes along our streets and parking fields. Nassau County is also focusing attention to the repair of pot holes on the 16 miles of county roads that are their responsibility and are located within the boundaries of Garden City, i.e., Clinton Road, Washington Avenue, County Seat Drive, Franklin Avenue, Cathedral Avenue, Cherry Valley Avenue, Nassau Boulevard, New Hyde Park Road as well as Stewart Avenue, west of Rockaway Avenue.
We are looking forward to the complete replacement of the pedestrian crosswalks along Franklin Avenue and the side streets, which will begin this spring.
Spring Cleanup
All residents are asked to assist in the task of cleaning up our community to make it look like a beautiful “Garden City.” We can do that by picking up paper, cans, bottles and other debris, which may have been deposited on the streets and other public areas near their homes. A few minutes of cooperative effort by all of us can make our village look 100 percent better.
Residents are also reminded that rubbish should not be placed on the curb before the evening prior to the collection day. It is a detraction from the aesthetics of the village and poor treatment of one’s neighbors to ignore the village law, which specifies that rubbish should not be deposited at curbside before the evening prior to collection.
Pet owners are asked to please be considerate of those who are working to keep our community beautiful and those who are using park areas by cleaning up after your dog and by disposing of the waste at curbside on Wednesdays.
The Police Department is issuing summonses for these violations, which are answerable in the Village Justice Court and can result in a fine for each offense.
Board of Trustees Meetings
The next board of trustees meeting will be the annual organizational meeting, on April 4. The meeting will be held in the boardroom at Village Hall.
