The hamlet of Oyster Bay is really coming along. The Oyster Bay Chamber of Commerce deserves some thanks. Driving down Pine Hollow Road on Saturday, we saw the little trees along the curb. The trees were planted by the Town of Oyster Bay as a result of the chamber requesting them. The trees are a welcome addition to the scene.
It is nice to think that in the future – we hope it is the near future – the asphalt sidewalks will be replaced by concrete and maybe more trees and brickwork.
The asphalt is really tatty looking!
That area of town has too long been ignored. It’s sort of like Snouder’s Corner Drugstore. Something you don’t want to look at and actually avert your eyes as you drive by. Actually that is part of the reason why trees are considered traffic calming – you aren’t speeding by to get out of an unpleasant area.
Which takes us back to those awful aluminum window frames at Snouder’s that catch the light and scream at you – “I don’t belong here.” If the windows were bordered by wood frames, with the appropriate moldings the building would fit into the streetscape and not offend. If it is restored to its original splendor it would make you smile again. We can only hope.
Because, “When you cry in your soup.” as Phil Blocklyn, Oyster Bay Historical Society executive director said, “Life is more tears than soup.”
I think I want to do a quilt with that as the title.
