“Grey’s Anatomy” is about to start its eighth season in the fall, with Doctor McDreamy making his final farewell.
The popular doctor on the show, Patrick Dempsey, who plays Derek, revealed to Italian Vanity Fair his plans to move on. He told the magazine, “I do not know what’s going to happen to the other characters, but for me, it’s done.”
The actor’s publicist released a statement to Entertainment Weekly that alluded to the fact that what he said during the interview may have been taken out of context.
According to EW, Dempsey’s rep said : “He was referring to the fact that his contract is up at the end of next season and we have no idea what the future holds.”
According to www.tvovermind.com, the creator of the show, Shonda Rhimes, is not surprised by this news and has revealed that other main characters may also be departing after the coming season.
So why is it that Dempsey stated that he is leaving Grey’s Anatomy even though he is not completely sure what will happen with his contract? Some suspect that this is a way to receive a better contract from ABC after his current one expires. Viewers won’t know until the eighth season is over and ABC tries to come up with a new contract.
