New Cassel to Open Farmers’ Market

Farmers_Market

Farmers MarketA new farmers’ market will launch this weekend in New Cassel, which will provide access to fresh, affordable Long Island produce to residents of New Cassel, Westbury and the surrounding area.

The market will be staffed by local youth who will learn important business skills and job training, while providing community members with fruit and vegetables from eight local farms. The market will accept Cash, EBT cards, WIC and Senior FMNP checks.

New Cassel, an unincorporated hamlet of roughly 12,000 residents, has a long and complex history. Fresh fruit and vegetables are not easily accessible in New Cassel, particularly for the more than 16 percent of the community who do not have access to a vehicle and rely on public transportation, according to Sustainable Long Island.

Community members consistently identify the need for fresh fruit and vegetables as a high priority in community discussions, which is why improving access to fresh, healthy, affordable food is essential to the successful revitalization of New Cassel.

The market will open September 3 during a press conference at noon. Its regular hours will be Saturdays from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. through November 19 at First Baptist Cathedral of Westbury’s parking lot at 212 Garden St., Westbury.
