Children’s Yoga and Zumba

There are several openings available for the tween yoga class and our new children’s Zumba classes. These classes will be held in St. Paul’s Cluett Hall according to the following schedule:

Yoga for ages 10-14 Fridays at 6:45 p.m. Cost – $198 for 22 weeks

Zumba for ages 7-12 Saturdays at 11 a.m. Cost – $108 for 12 weeks

Zumba for ages 13 and up Saturdays at 9:15 a.m. cost – $108 for 12 weeks

Adult Activities in St. Paul’s Field House

St. Paul’s Field House will begin holding nighttime activities for adults who are Garden City residents who have graduated from high school. The nighttime activity schedule began in St. Paul’s Field House on Tuesday, Oct. 11 according to the schedule below:

Mondays and Wednesdays 7:30 to 10 p.m. Open basketball Men’s over 40 Basketball

Tuesdays 7:30 – 10 p.m. Men’s over 30 Basketball

Thursday 7:30 – 10 p.m. Coed Volleyball

The program is free and all games are strictly “pickup.” The activities are monitored by our recreation staff. Proof of residency is required by providing a photo ID. For further information, please call the Recreation Office at 465-4075.  

Registration for Fall Pee-Wee Sports Sampler Begins

The Garden City Recreation Department will once again offer our very poplar Pee-Wee Sports Sampler program. This program is open to children ages 4 and 5 who are residents of the Inc. Village of Garden City. The seven-week program, which will begin in mid-October has been designed to provide an opportunity to try a wide variety of sports with basic instruction in a fun setting.

Classes will be held in the St. Paul’s Field House according to the following schedule: Tuesdays at 12:30 p.m. or 1:45 p.m. (Beginning 10/18); and Wednesdays at 12:30 p.m. or 1:45 p.m. (Beginning 10/19).

Each class is 55 minutes long. The cost of this seven-week program is $87.50 to register, visit the Recreation Office at 108 Rockaway Ave.

Adult Zumba and Dance Classes Announced

The Recreation Department is offering Adult Dance and Zumba classes as part of the Dance Conservatory. These classes are open to any adult 18 years or older who is a resident of the Inc. Village of Garden City. Our offerings are –

Tuesdays at 9:15 a.m. Zumba Gold for adults aged 55 or older

Tuesdays at 8 p.m. Zumba for everyone

Thursdays at 9:15 a.m. Zumba for everyone

Saturdays at 9:15 a.m. Zumba for teens through adult

Saturdays at 10 a.m. Women’s Dance Performance Group

All classes will run for 12 weeks at a cost of $108 except for the performance group, which runs for 22 weeks ($198).

Tennis Learn and Play at Community Park

Would you like to learn to play the game of tennis? If you are an adult who is a resident of the Inc. Village of Garden City, here is your opportunity with our new learn and play tennis clinics.

Our clinics will meet on Wednesdays from 12:30 – 2 p.m., beginning Wednesday, Oct. 19 and meet for nine weeks at a cost of $225. This program is for adults who are considered “ranked” beginners. If you are interested in joining, please visit the Recreation Office at 108 Rockaway Ave. to register.

Junior Team Tennis League Tryouts Announced

Tryouts for the Recreation Department’s Junior Team Tennis League will be held on Saturday, Oct.15 from 2:30–4:30 p.m. for ages 9 – 11 and on Sunday, Oct.16 from noon– 2 p.m. for ages 12- 14. You must be a resident of the Inc. Village of Garden City in order to participate. Junior Team Tennis is a USTA organization which encourages children to begin playing competitive tennis in a fun environment. It’s a great way to transition from the Recreation Department’s lesson program into actual game playing with team camaraderie. Teams are set up by age and ability and are coached by our tennis teaching professionals at practices on Saturday and /or Sunday afternoons. Teams tennis member lessons at an additional cost will be also available for those children selected for the team.

After tryouts take place, teams will be selected, team registration fees will be collected, and play will begin by November. This program runs through April.

The tryout fee will be $5, payable at tryouts. To register please call the Community Park Tennis Hut at 483-2525.

Adult Tennis Lesson Interest Form Available

Registration for the first session of our adult tennis lessons has now started. Classes will begin in October and are played at the Community Park Tennis Center. Our ten week, one-hour classes will cost $249.

Our Recreation Department offers lessons for adults at all ability levels. In order to create sessions geared to the needs of our residents, we are asking any adult who is a resident of the Inc. Village of Garden City to come to the Recreation Administrative Office at 108 Rockaway Ave to fill out an interest form. The form includes the following information:

– Choose the days and times you are available to play

– Self-rate your tennis ability

– Either drop off or mail your application with a check for $249 made payable to the Inc. Village of Garden City to the Recreation Office at 108 Rockaway Ave.

Classes will then be made by grouping people of similar abilities according to the dates they are available. Your check will not be cashed until you are entered into a class.

Adelphi Pool Membership for Adults Offered

Adelphi University is now offering a “Pool Only” membership to adult residents of the Inc. Village of Garden City. This membership will give the user use of Adelphi’s lap pool during stated hours until May 31, 2012. The cost of the membership will be $225. Our Recreation Department has the paperwork necessary to join this program. If you are 18 years or older and are interested in obtaining a membership, please call the office at 108 Rockaway Ave. or Woodruff Hall at Adelphi University.

Zumba Gold

Zumba Gold is a program for adults aged 55 or older who consider themselves “active seniors.” Zumba is the newest exercise craze and we have a certified instructor on our staff who will teach you the steps.

Classes will be held in St. Paul’s Cluett Hall on Tuesdays at 9:15 a.m., and began Tuesday, Oct. 11. This 45-minute class teaches the basics of Zumba. The class, led by Felicia Lovaglio, runs for 12 weeks at a cost of $48.
