Mystery Picture Remains a Mystery
Belle Santora, called to identify the Oct. 20 picture in the Enterprise Pilot. She said. “I think I know the picture. It’s the Baptist cemetery on Orchard Street. I recognized the trees in the background.” The answer was no, it was not.
She said, “What else could it be. Not Fort Hill? Is it the Old cemetery off Pine Hollow Road? Well it’s a nice day. Enjoy it,” she said.
Ms. Santora added, “I forgot to call for the Oct. 13 photo. “That is a vintage car. It’s the first Model T Ford and in the background is the building which Teddy used as a Summer White house. It’s where Wild Honey is now.
“On the side of the picture is Hanophy’s, then Steadman’s and Nobman’s. And the roads were dirt roads then.”
Belle said, “I didn’t have a car until I married. It was a 1936 Plymouth. We put $65 down a week before the wedding and paid $28 a month for about two years. The car lasted. You had to go 500 miles before you broke the car in. My husband was using the car to driving back and forth to Astoria where he and his mother lived. On our honeymoon we hit the 500-mile mark as we got to Rothmanns.”
Belle had a word for us to live by, “You have to seize the moment. Yesterday was history, today is a mystery, and tomorrow is the present – the present you receive.”
Billy Minicozzi made a guess at the cemetery location saying it might be Bayville or Upper Brookville – which it is not, but it does cut down on the possibilities.
On a sports note he said, “The Jets finally won a game on Sunday. They beat San Diego 27-21!”
That’s it for today. We are still waiting for the Oct. 20 mystery picture answer.
