Sagamore Girls Take First Place In Frostbite Regatta

Girls Score 236 Points to Manhasset’s 229

The Sagamore boys and girls rowing teams competed in the semi-annual Frostbite Regatta this past Saturday at Centre Island Beach in Bayville. The girls team came in first place overall in points in the event which featured 36 different competitions including a challenging 2.5 course around West Harbor Beach.

The girls had a point total of 236 points which beat Manhasset (229), and Our Lady of Mercy (53). The boys had 114 points placing second behind Manhasset.

The Sagamore team itself includes: Shannon Dennington, Emma Gugerty, Danial Yunakov, Max Gagliano, Chase Taylor, Giselle Richter, Grey Warwick-Clark, Marissa Catalanotto, Shannon Dennington, Sigal Markowitz, Stephanie Bousleiman, Gabrielle Dellaquilo and Adrienne Bielawski.

Many of the individual athletes came in first place and received gold medals in their respective competitions. Oyster Bay High School junior Mackenzie Blanz placed first in two events including the mens Varsity 2x final and the Varsity 4x final.

On the girls side, Friends Academy/Sagamore rower Nina Vascotto came in first place in the women’s 1x final with a time of 10:08:47 followed by fellow rower Shannon Dennington, time 10:40:66. Katherine Wiedenhoft took gold in the women’s novice 4x race. Francesca Maida came in first place in the 4x final and Ada Bielawski placed first in the 2x final of the Junior Varsity competition.

Over 800 student athletes from 18 area high schools competed, and the event drew over 2,000 spectators during the day, from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

This semi-annual event is one of the most competitive high school rowing events in the Northeast, and is one of the largest high school sporting events on Long Island. The student athletes competed in 36 events during the day based on their ability (freshmen, junior varsity, varsity), rowing shell type (scull and sweep), and boat size (single, doubles, quads/fours, and eights).
