Handel’s Messiah Sing-Along at St. Paul’s Cluett Hall

Come join the Recreation Department as we offer a night of caroling with the Long Island Choral Society on Sunday, Dec. 11 at 7 p.m. in St. Paul’s Cluett Hall. The Long Island Choral Society, founded in 1929, is the oldest continuously performing musical group on Long Island. It has a reputation for singing the finest works of choral music with professional soloists and orchestras. The LICS prides itself on its long-standing relationship with our village. Our Recreation Department is thrilled to offer this free program to our residents. Preregistration is necessary by calling the office at 465-4075 by Friday, Dec. 9 at 4 p.m. Please join as we all sing along to bring in the holiday season.

Adult Yoga Registration Begins

Connie McKnight, our certified yoga instructor, has designed adult yoga classes with all ages in mind. Each class is one hour long. All classes will begin in mid January. Any resident of the Inc. Village of Garden City is invited to join these relaxing classes. The session will run for 14 weeks at a cost of $91.

The course schedule is as follows:

Mondays at 7:30 p.m. beginning 1/23 to be held in St. Paul’s Senior Center

Wednesdays at 10:15 a.m. beginning 1/11 to be held in St. Paul’s Cluett Hall

Letters to Santa

It’s time to send letters to Santa and the Recreation Department will speed up the process. A special “Santa’s Mailbox” will be set up in the waiting area of the Recreation Department’s Administrative Offices at 108 Rockaway Ave., beginning Dec. 1. Children can drop their letters in the mailbox and Santa will send them a personalized reply. Santa’s mailbox will be available through Dec. 20.

Christmas Candy Contest

In addition to sending their letters to Santa, kids can take a chance at guessing the number of candy pieces in the jar next to Santa’s Mailbox and the child whose guess is closest to the actual number will win the jar, candy and all. As with Santa’s mailbox, the candy contest will be available from Dec. 1 to Dec. 20.

A Visit From Santa

Santa will visit the Recreation Office at 108 Rockaway Ave., for visits and photos on Dec. 8, 13, and 15 from 3 to 4:15 p.m. The Recreation Department Staff will be available to take and print photos. There is no fee for a photo but a donation of a small gift for Toys for Tots would be appreciated.

After School Programs for Grades K-5

The Garden City Recreation Department is pleased to announce that this winter, the Recreation Staff will conduct a gym program for children in grades three to five.

This free program will consist of organized games and activities in a supervised setting. It will run from 3:30 to 5:45 p.m. in St. Paul’s Field House beginning the week of Dec. 5 through Feb. 10, according to the following schedule:

Girls in grades three to five Mondays from 3:30 – 5:45 p.m.

Grades K-two (All) Wednesdays from 3:30 – 5 p.m.

Boys in grades three to five Fridays from 3:30 – 5:45 p.m.

Sneakers must be worn for any activity in the field house.

Note-Once the children are in our facility, they will not be allowed to leave unless accompanied by an adult. Please come into the building to pick up your child and please be prompt.

Again, this is a free program but a registration form is necessary, so please visit the Recreation Office at 108 Rockaway to fill out a form.

Second Session of Peewee Sports Sampler Announced

The second session of the Recreation Department’s Peewee Sports Sampler will begin the week of Dec. 12. This program is designed especially for the young child as a positive introductory experience to sports. Each session runs for six weeks and each class is 50 minutes long. Children participating must be 4 years old by the start of the session in order to attend. Classes are offered according to the following schedule:

Tuesdays at 1:45 p.m.

Wednesdays at 12:30 p.m. or 1:45 p.m.

The cost of each session will be $75. To register, please visit our Recreation Office at 108 Rockaway Ave. download and mail an application from our website at www.gardencityrecreation.org.

After School Open Gym for Grades 7-12

The Garden City Recreation Department is pleased to announce that this winter we will sponsor an Open Gym program for basketball and volleyball for middle and high school aged students. This program will be conducted weekday afternoons after school in the St. Paul’s Field House.

The Winter Open Gym Program will provide the students an opportunity to participate in after school activities in a supervised setting. This program will begin on Dec. 6 and will be open every Tuesday and Thursday from 3:30 p.m. until 6 p.m.

Please note: This is a time set aside for middle and high school students to enjoy our facility while having fun with their friends. No organized practices may take place at this time. Since the Recreation Department will provide supervision, no adults will be allowed in this field house at this time.

Interview Dates for Summer Pool Employment

The Recreation Department is announcing the start of a series of interviews for summer jobs at the Garden City Pool. If you enjoy being outdoors and are willing to make a commitment to be a part of a team that works hard to provide quality facilities to our residents, we’d like to meet you!

If you are presently a high school senior (graduating in June 2012) or older, are available to start working June 12, 2012, and are looking for a great summer job, stop in the Recreation Office in Village Hall, pick up an application and make an appointment for an interview. To register for an interview or call the Recreation Office at 465-4075.

Reminder: Even if you were employed by the pool last year, you are still required to reapply and be interviewed for the upcoming season.

Community Tennis Center Instructional Programs for Winter 2012

We are pleased to announce the start of registration for our Winter Indoor Tennis Program for Children at the Community Park Tennis Center. Registration for Session One lessons begins immediately for residents of the village.

A schedule of classes and a registration form is on the reverse side of the information sheet. Walk-in residents and nonresident children attending Garden City Public Schools will be accepted beginning Dec. 19. Make checks payable to: Inc. Village of Garden City.

Winter Session — Classes begin Monday, January 23

Tots Ages 4-5

PeeWee – Ages 5 to 7: Introduction to Tennis, emphasizing basic movement and striking skills in a fun game-playing environment.

Novice – Ages 6 to 7: Continued development of basic movement and striking skills on a full size court. Serving and scorekeeping will be introduced. Past tennis experience required.

Junior – Ages 8 to 11: Extension of Novice Level program. Continued emphasis on striking concepts, movement, and skills related to tennis.

Junior Advanced – Ages 8 to 11: For the more serious, more advanced students. These lessons are offered in 1 1/2 hour time slots. Experience required.

Senior – Ages 12 and older: Extension of Junior Program, continued emphasis on fundamentals and skills related to tennis play.

Senior Advanced – Ages 12 and older: For the more serious, more advanced student. These lessons are offered in 1 1/2 hour time slots. Experience required.

Ultimate Workout: For experienced Junior and Senior Level Tennis Players who want to hone their skills and get a good workout.

To register: by mail only, no walk-in registrations will be accepted until Monday, Dec. 19. We cannot be held responsible for delays in the mail. You can also make your own by listing your child’s name, address, phone number, birth date, grade, the class for which you are registering with a first and second choice. Mail all information with full payment to the Garden City Recreation Department at 108 Rockaway Avenue. Please make all checks payable to the “Inc. Village of Garden City.”

Saturday Men’s Basketball

The Recreation Department’s Saturday Men’s Baskeball program began on Saturday, Dec. 3 in the Middle School South Gym. This free program is open to adult residents of the Inc. Village of Garden City. Games are strictly “pickup” and game time is 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. The program is monitored by the Recreation Department’s staff. For further information, please call the Recreation Office at 465-4075.
