Things to Do on Long Island Dec. 30 to Jan. 5

festivusFEATURED EVENTS

FESTIVUS FOR THE REST OF US @ TAP & BARREL
Sick of the holidays? Celebrate with the Costanzas (in spirit, anyway) at a holiday cookie party from 9 p.m. to midnight. Ready your grievances and your very high strength-to-weight ratio aluminum pole. This holiday party begins with cookies and ends, of course, when you pin the host to the ground. 550-8 Smithtown Bypass, Smithtown. 631-780-5474. Wednesday, 12.28—Jaclyn Gallucci

KEVIN DEVINE @ OLLIE’S POINT
Between growing up in Staten Island and Brooklyn, playing in a band called Miracle of 86 (named after the 1986 Mets) and graduating from Fordham, Kevin Devine is about as authentic a New Yorker as a Junior’s Cheesecake. With influences ranging from Neutral Milk Hotel and Pavement to Bob Dylan and Elliott Smith, Devine has also built up a loyal following through six albums and a handful of EPs. His most recent effort was covering Nevermind in its entirety in honor of the album’s twentieth anniversary and letting fans download it off his website for free. Thursday, 1.5—Dave Gil de Rubio

ANDREW WK @ OLLIE’S POINT
There was once a time when Andrew W.K. was known for being a hard rocking singer-songwriter with a penchant for wearing all white. In the last decade he’s significantly added to his skill set by becoming a motivational speaker, respected interviewer (DirecTV), nightclub entrepreneur (Santos House Party), Cartoon Network show host (Build Destroy Build) and even a date for Kathy Griffin on her reality show, Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List. The Manhattan resident-cum-Michigan native heads out for another foray onto Long Island in a return to his first love of performing live. With Iron Chic, Media Hounds, Memo, The Things They Carried & Dry Clean Only. Friday, 12.30—Dave Gil de Rubio

GOV’T MULE @ BEACON THEATRE
It’s no exaggeration to say that Warren Haynes has inherited the mantle of “the hardest working man in show business” from James Brown. In addition to doing double duty with the Allman Brothers Band and Gov’t Mule, he’s carved out some time for a solo career. The man is a true road dog, (the Mule played its 1,000th performance back in ’04!), and like Patti Smith, he’s established the tradition of playing an end-of-year set of gigs at the Beacon that’s become a favorite pastime for members of Jam Band Nation. Friday, 12.30 & Saturday, 12.31—Dave Gil de Rubio

LOS LOBOS @ CITY WINERY
Going into its fifth decade of making music together, Los Lobos stands at the crossroads of American roots music and traditional Spanish and Mexican folkloric tradtion. And while last year’s Tin Can Trust was the band’s most recent studio recording of original material, (and first in four years), the quintet continues to share stages with the likes of Los Lonely Boys, Taj Mahal and Eric Clapton. Saturday, 12.31—Dave Gil de Rubio

CASSANDRA WILSON @ THE BLUE NOTE
As that rare jazz artist who manages to explore the realms of pop music without coming off sounding like elevator music (are you listening Kenny G?), Cassandra Wilson is that rare artist who can give gravitas to The Monkees’ “Last Train to Clarksville” without a scintilla of irony. The husky-voiced chanteuse continued down this eclectic path with last year’s Silver Pony, this time wrapping herself around an array of composers including Lennon-McCartney, Stevie Wonder, Luiz Bonfa and Charley Patton. Jan.3-7—Dave Gil de Rubio
