Pee-Wee All Sports Sampler

The Garden City Recreation Department is proud to announce it will offer a morning session of our popular Pee-Wee All Sports Sampler program this winter for children ages 4 and 5 who are residents of the Inc. Village of Garden City. This seven-week program, which will begin the week of Feb. 7, has been designed to provide an opportunity to try a wide variety of sports with basic instruction.

This program will run for one hour and will be an instructional, incorporating new skills and free play in a non-competitive atmosphere. A different sport will be offered each week.

Classes will be held on Tuesday or Wednesday afternoons at 12:30 or 1:45 p.m. in the St. Paul’s Field House. The cost of this program will be $87.50.

Family Fun Time on Sundays

On Sunday afternoons beginning Jan. 8, the St. Paul’s Field House will be open for “Family Fun” for Village families. This open time provides the opportunity for families to enjoy various gym activities in an indoor environment. The gym will be available for use from 2:45 to 5:45 p.m. each Sunday until March 11.

This time is designated for family time only. No organized practices or workouts will be allowed. Although there will be staff to monitor activity, this is not a drop off program. Elementary-aged children must be accompanied by an adult. For the safety of our users, no lacrosse or baseball will be allowed.

Family Movie Day

On Sunday, Jan. 22, the Recreation Department will show the movie Cars 2 in St. Paul’s Cluett Hall at 1 p.m. This movie, running 106 minutes, is rated G. Admission is free and snacks will be served at a nominal charge.

Sixth-Grade Rec Night on January 27

The Garden City Recreation Department is sponsoring a Middle School Rec. Night for sixth-graders on the following dates at St. Paul’s Field House: Friday, Jan. 27

These parties will be chaperoned by the Recreation staff and will run from 7 to 9 p.m. Admission is $5. A DJ will provide music and refreshments will be available for a nominal charge. The gym will be open for basketball, volleyball, dancing and other games.

Note: Once the children are in our facility for either of these programs, they will not be allowed to leave unless accompanied by an adult. Please come into the building to pick up your child.

Registration for Winter Zumba Begins

Zumba is the newest adult activity we offer! If you enjoy exercise that keeps you moving while enjoying great music, these classes are for you. The following classes for adults will be offered by the Recreation Department:

Zumba Tuesdays at 8 p.m. 12 weeks $108

Zumba Thursdays at 9:15 a.m. 12 weeks $108

Zumba Saturdays at 9:15 a.m. 12 weeks $108

All classes are led by Felicia Lovaglio, director of our Dance Conservatory and adjunct professor at Adelphi. Each class is one hour long and will be held in Cluett Hall. All classes will begin the week of Feb. 7. To register for any of these classes, fill out the form below and return to the Recreation Office at 108 Rockaway Avenue with a check made payable to the “Inc. Village of Garden City.”

Join Us for the Winter Session of Mad Science

 The Recreation Department will again offer an afterschool science program for Grades K-5 run by Mad Science of Long Island. These hands-on workshops offer topics such as “Bugs” and “Mad Science Machines” in a fun and educational way! Make- and take-its will be included in the sessions. This six-week program will begin the week of Jan. 23 according to the following schedule:

Grades 3-5: Tuesdays or Wednesdays at 4 p.m.

All classes are one hour in length and will be held in St. Paul’s Senior Center, next door to the Recreation Office, at 108 Rockaway Ave. The cost of this six-week session is $103. All checks should be made payable to Mad Science of LI. To register, please visit the Recreation Office at 108 Rockaway Avenue or download an application from the website at www.gardencityrecraetion.org.

Santa Photos Are Ready for Pickup

If you had your photo taken with Santa at Garden City Recreation, your photos are ready for pickup. We are open from 8:30 to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday, so stop by 108 Rockaway Ave. We will hold the photos until the end of the month.

Zumba Gold for the Active Senior

Dance director Felicia Lovaglio will again conduct Zumba Gold classes, sessions geared for Active Seniors or beginners over the age of 50. The newest way to exercise gives you a great workout while moving to fun music! Classes will be held in St. Paul’s Cluett Hall on Tuesdays at 9:15 a.m., beginning Tuesday, Jan. 24. The 45-minute class, led by Felicia Lovaglio, runs for 15 weeks at a cost of $60. Adult Art Classes at Cluett Hall

Beginning Feb. 17, the Recreation Department will again offer an adult pastel class taught by Arleen Ruth Urban. This class is open to adult residents of the Inc. Village of Garden City. Our classes will be held from 9 to 11:30 a.m. each Friday in Cluett Hall at St. Paul’s. The cost of the 10-week program will be $110 (Supplies are bought on your own—a supply list will be handed out at the first class).

This program will teach the beginner as well as advanced student the art of painting portraits and landscapes/still life in pastels from photographs. Students will be given the option of dividing each 3-hour session between portrait or landscape, or they may concentrate solely on the subject of their choice.

Demonstrations will be available as needed throughout the program. Each student will receive the individual attention required to work at his or her own pace and level of expertise. Arleen Ruth Urban, the instructor for this program, is a signature member of the Pastel Society of America. A winner of numerous awards, her commissioned portraits hang in the many Garden City homes.

Adult Beginner Tennis Lessons

Would you like to learn to play the game of tennis? If you are an adult who is a resident of the Inc. Village of Garden City, here is your opportunity with our new learn and play tennis clinics. Our clinics will meet on Wednesdays from 12:30 – 2 p.m. beginning Wednesday, Jan. 11 and meet for nine weeks at a cost of $225. This program is for adults who are considered “ranked” beginners. If you are interested in joining, please visit the Recreation Office at 108 Rockaway Ave. to register.

Winter Preschool Arts and Crafts

The Garden City Recreation Department Preschool Arts & Crafts program is open to Garden City residents only, ages 3-½ to 5 yrs. Classes are 45 minutes long. The cost is $30.

Adult Tennis Lesson Interest Form Now Available

Registration for the winter session of our Adult Tennis Lessons has now started. Classes will begin in January and are played at the Community Park Tennis Center. The department’s 10-week, one-hour class will cost $249. The Recreation Department offers lessons for adults of all ability levels. In order to create sessions geared to the needs of our residents, we are asking any adult who is a resident of the Inc. Village of Garden City and is interested in our tennis lessons to fill out an interest form by visiting either our office at 108 Rockaway Ave. or downloading an application at www.gardencityrecreation.org. Please follow the directions listed.

Choose the days and times you are available to play and self-rate your tennis ability. Either drop off or mail your application with a check for $249 made payable to the Inc. Village of Garden City Recreation Office at 108 Rockaway Ave. by Dec. 30. Payment must accompany the form. Classes will then be made by grouping people of similar abilities according to the dates they are available. Your check will not be cashed until you are entered into a class.

Adult Yoga Registration Begins

Connie McKnight, our certified yoga instructor, has designed adult yoga classes with all ages in mind. Each class is one-hour long. All classes will begin in mid-January. Any resident of the Inc. Village of Garden City is invited to join these relaxing classes. The session will run for 14 weeks at a cost of $91.

The course schedule is as follows:

Mondays at 7:30 p.m. beginning Jan. 23 to be held in St. Paul’s Senior Center

Wednesdays at 10:15 a.m. beginning Jan. 11 to be held in St. Paul’s Cluett Hall

Community Tennis Center Instructional Programs for Winter 2012

We are pleased to announce the start of registration for our Winter Indoor Tennis Program for Children at the Community Park Tennis Center. Registration for Session One lessons begins immediately for residents of the village.

A schedule of classes and a registration form is on the reverse side of the information sheet. Walk-in residents and nonresident children attending Garden City Public Schools were accepted beginning Dec. 19. Make checks payable to: Inc. Village of Garden City.

Winter Session — Classes begin Monday, January 23

Tots Ages 4-5

PeeWee – Ages 5 to 7: Introduction to Tennis, emphasizing basic movement and striking skills in a fun game-playing environment.

Novice – Ages 6 to 7: Continued development of basic movement and striking skills on a full size court. Serving and scorekeeping will be introduced. Past tennis experience required.

Junior – Ages 8 to 11: Extension of Novice Level program. Continued emphasis on striking concepts, movement, and skills related to tennis.

Junior Advanced – Ages 8 to 11: For the more serious, more advanced students. These lessons are offered in 1 1/2 hour time slots. Experience required.

Senior – Ages 12 and older: Extension of Junior Program, continued emphasis on fundamentals and skills related to tennis play.

Senior Advanced – Ages 12 and older: For the more serious, more advanced student. These lessons are offered in 1 1/2 hour time slots. Experience required.

Ultimate Workout: For experienced Junior and Senior Level Tennis Players who want to hone their skills and get a good workout.

You can also make your own by listing your child’s name, address, phone number, birth date, grade, the class for which you are registering with a first and second choice.
