On this day Bryan Trottier records his 500th NHL goal.

The former Islander was born on July 17, 1956 and played 18 seasons in the National Hockey League.

Trottier, who played centre, makes up one eighth of the players who have had multiple five-goal games.

The legend has his own NHL record for points in a single period with six, four goals and two assists. The record game was against the Rangers on Dec. 23, 1978 in the second period.

The former Islander played his best offensive season in 1978-79 when he had 134 points earning him two trophies. He was awarded The Art Ross Trophy and the Hart Trophy when he was the league MVP.

The Islanders dynasty team was unforgettable in the 1980s and Trottier was one of its core players. He  helped the Islanders win the first of they 1980s dynasty cups in 1980, and went on to win a total of four from 1980-83. During 1981-82 scored 50 goals, which as reported is the highest of his career.

Trottier has had a few nicknames over his career, his first was “Trots” right after he was drafted, and he was later referred as the “glue” on the Isles team, since he centered his fellow all-star teammates Clark Gillies and Mike Bossy.

Remarkably, in 1997 Trottier was admitted into the Hockey Hall of Fame, the first year he was eligible to be inducted.

Just like many of his Islander teammates, including the other two members of The Trio Grande, Mike Bossy and Clark Gillies, Trottier was honored by the Islander organization by having his number retired. On October 20, 2001 his number 19 was raised to the rafters.

Trottier had the honor of being named as the second greatest player in franchise history by Islanders fans, preceding Mike Bossy.
