St. Paul’s
I would like to thank village residents Robert and Patricia Kaliban for their generous donation of $6,500 to pay to repair the St. Paul’s roof damage caused by Tropical Storm Irene and to Vinny Muldoon of Old World Quality Corp., for agreeing to repair the roof for the amount of the Kaliban donation and further to repair the damage to the clock tower at no cost to the village.
Amanda’s Law Carbon Monoxide Alarms
“Amanda’s Law” took effect a year ago in New York State. This law requires all residences, both new and existing to have carbon monoxide alarms installed on any floor where there are sleeping areas. The specific requirements differ for new and existing residences and also on when the buildings were built and subcategories of occupancy groups. The following link provides the proposed code text and legislation — http://www.dos.state. ny.us/codeCOAlarm.htm. If you have any questions feel free to call the Garden City Fire Department at 746-1301.
Please remember that this law is for your own safety. Just because an alarm is installed in the home, does not make it necessarily the only thing that needs to be done. Make sure that the back-up batteries are changed as per the manufacture’s recommendations, or after any power outage and replace the detector after five years.
Only last week a resident called the Garden City Fire Department because of a “sounding” carbon monoxide alarm. The carbon monoxide detector was found to be outdated.
Village Begins E-Cycling As an Additional Service To Residents
The Department of Environmental Conservation has placed restrictions on the collection and disposal of e-waste (televisions, computers, computer peripherals such as printers, scanners, etc.). Collectors such as the Village will be required to separately collect these items and designate them for recycling or reuse. The Village has contacted a vendor which has been designated by the Town of Hempstead for e-waste recycling and they have agreed to provide a POD which will be located at the Village Yard for the collection of e-waste which will be recycled by them.
Beginning on Feb. 7, the village began collecting e-waste and this will continue on the first and third Tuesdays of each month. If you would like to schedule a “pick up” of your e-waste, please call the Village Yard at 465-4031 and someone will assist you in the scheduling of a pick up at your home. You may also bring your “e-waste” to the Village Yard for disposal.
