Davy Jones of The Monkees died Wednesday of a severe heart attack.
According to The Martin County Medical Examiner, a early Thursday morning autopsy determined he died of an abnormal heart rhythm cause by artery atherosclerosis, reported TMZ .
The lead singer of The Monkees died at 66 years old in Florida.
Jones is survived by his wife Jessica Pacheco and four daughters from previous marriages.
He’s best known for his role in the band The Monkees, which he joined in 1965 when they were put together for a television show with the same name.
Jones along with bandmates Micky Dolenz, Michael Nesmith and Peter Tork are best known for producing hit songs like, “I’m a Believer,” and “Daydream Believer.”
Jones sang lead vocals for the group including for hit song “I Wanna Be Free.”
In 1971 the show went off the air and the group disbanded though Jones reportedly continued on solo and at times was joined by Monkee Micky Dolenz and songwriters Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart.
As we’ve previously reported, last February, Jones participated in The Monkees reunion tour that was the group’s first tour in a decade following Monkeemania in 2001.
The tour kicked off in May 2011 and took the group through United Kingdom, United States and Canada with a second leg of “An Evening With The Monkees: The 45th Anniversary Tour,” planned for Fall 2011. The dates were eventually canceled.
