A six-year-old from Colorado was suspended from school after singing “I’m sexy and I know it” to one of his female classmates on the lunch line, CBS reports.
The boy from Aurora, Colorado, D’Avonte Meadows, is missing out on three days of school due to school officials say he was sexual harassing another student by singing the popular line.
The first grader at Sable Elementary School in Denver Colorado was sent home with a letter to bring to his mother saying he was disturbing others.
When CBS tried to contact the school they said they would not discuss the case but pointed out that the school defines any unwanted sexual advance as harassment, there is no age limit.
Is that really fair? The six-year-old was singing a popular line that’s been on the radio for the last few months and it’s a line everyone knows.
The Aurora Police Department is not getting involved in the case since sexual harassment laws only apply to those children who are 10 or older.
Stephanie Meadows, D’Avonte’s mother, told CBS her son doesn’t understand what sexual harassment means. It’s the second time he has gotten in trouble for saying the line.
For two weeks in January “Sexy and I Know It” by LMFAO spent time at the top of Billboard’s Hot 100 chart.
Aurora Public Schools issued a statement on Thursday which says they are trying to provide an equal learning environment for all of the pupils at their school.
“We have policies and protocol in place to prevent any disruption to the learning environment. Due to privacy laws, we are unable to discuss appropriate disciplinary consequences about a specific student,” wrote spokeswoman Paula Hans.
Do you think D’Avonte’s suspension was too severe?
