The official announcement is expected to come Wednesday, the New York Times reported, citing an unnamed source.
The paper of record reported that Mayor Michael Bloomberg will join Mets officials and MLB Commissioner Bud Selig at City Hall around noon on Wednesday to make the announcement.
The last time the Mets hosted an All-Star game was 1964, the year that Shea Stadium opened up in Flushing.
Back in 2008, the Midsummer Classic was played at the old Yankee Stadium, before the stadium was demolished and the Yankees moved into their new digs across the street.
For those who aren’t big baseball fans, this is kind of a big deal. The game features the American League vs. the National League, and the winner decides who gets home field advantage in the World Series.
The Associated Press reported that the league knew for about four years that the All-Star game would be coming back to the Big Apple. Major League Baseball waited longer than usual to make the announcement because it had to work out details with the city and the NYPD, according to reports.
