Can those who wear long bangs that cover one eye develop a lazy eye?

An Australian optomotrist is warning that those who are choosing this fashion may be putting their eyes in danger, according to  the Daily Telegraph.

According to Dr. Andrew Hogan, because of celebrities like Justin Bieber and Reece Mastin, an entire generation of kids and teenagers might wind up lazy eyes.

Hogan, a member of Optometrists Association believes that amblyopia- the medical term for lazy eye- can happen when the view of one eye is obstructed due to a hairstyle.

“If a young emo chap has a fringe covering one eye all the time, that eye won’t see a lot of detail,” Mr Hogan said.

“And if it happens from a young age, that eye can become amblyotic.”

Though young children, those from ages birth to seven, are at the highest risk to develop amblyopia it is possible for it to occur at any age.

The “emo” haircut can also cause postural problems, the Daily Telegraph said.

People who have the haircut may be forced to tilt their head to the side in order to see properly, hairstylist Roseanne Anderson shares.

“I have to wonder how they don’t get a stiff neck,” the hairdresser said.

“I have seen lots of fashions come and go – but really when I think about it, this is probably the only hairstyle in my 40 years of hairdressing that could be a health hazard.”

Having hair that covers just one eye acts in the same way as an eye patch, Mr. Hogan revealed.

“If you walk around with an eye patch on all day, then that eye will end up seeing more poorly than the other eye,” he added.

Do you think people will begin to change their haircut if they know there is a possibility of amblyopia?
