Another surprise in the women’s Olympics gymnastic competition came this weekend when another American gymnast left disappointed.

Dubbed as one of the best gymnasts on vault in the world, United States gymnast McKayla Maroney failed to nab a gold medal during the women’s vault final at the London Olympics Sunday.

Maroney received the silver medal after falling during her second vault performance. As she attempted to land her Mustafina, her heels slipped out from under her as she touched the mat, leaving Maroney on her butt.

She finished with an impressive score of 15.003, and ultimately behind Romania’s Sandra Raluca Izbasa, who scored a 15.191 and took home the gold medal. Russia’s Maria Paseka won bronze.

Rumors were swirling following her performance that the California native was bitter about her silver and even snubbed another gymnast. Maroney took to Twitter to clear things up.

“For anyone who thought I didn’t want to hug Maria and Sandra that’s not the case(: They are my friends, and I’m proud of them both!” she tweeted.

Following the fall seen around the world, the 16-year-old told reporters that she didn’t deserve to win gold if she landed on her butt and that she wasn’t disappointed about the silver.

“I’m disappointed about my performance,” she said, according to Huffington Post.

She took to Twitter to further explain her disappointment. ” Disappointed on how today turned out, but everything happens for a reason!! #noregrets.. Plus, the silver medal is actually pretty sick!!” she tweeted.

In previous weeks, USA favored gymnast Jordyn Wieber was eliminated from competing in the all-around finals after teammates Aly Raisman and Gabby Douglas scored higher than her. Only two girls from each team can compete in the all-around finals.
