LOGO PointsForPatriots1Michael Schumer, a 15-year-old Long Islander, is organizing “Points for Patriots,” a round-robin tennis tournament that is open to the public and will benefit America’s military heroes and their families through the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund. The event will take place on August 18 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Le Club Tennis on Riverhead Road in Westhampton Beach, New York.

Last year’s event raised $15,000 and was supported by local businesses from across Long Island. This year’s goal is $25,000. Players can sign up to participate or make a donation at http://pointsforpatriots.eventbrite.com/

Michael lives in Muttontown and attends Jericho High School; he and his family live in Westhampton during the summer months. He is a ranked junior member of the United States Tennis Association (USTA).

“With thousands of troops returning from Iraq and Afghanistan, support of their ongoing needs is more critical than ever. They and their families deserve our support,” said Schumer. “It’s hard to go overseas to protect our country, to leave your family and friends. Coming out to play tennis to say thank you for what they have done for us is easy.”

Proceeds raised will go toward the current Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund campaign to construct as many as nine medical diagnostic and treatment centers to serve wounded heroes suffering from Traumatic Brain Injury and Post Traumatic Stress. To be funded and built with private donations, these NICoE (National Intrepid Center of Excellence) Satellite Centers are being located at military bases and medical centers around the country to provide medical care for service members without having to separate them from their units or leave their families for extended periods of treatment.  This proximity to family and friends is expected to enhance their care and rehabilitation. The first two are already under construction, at Fort Belvoir, VA and Camp Lejeune, NC.

The Points for Patriots tennis event will include round-robin tennis, a silent auction, and refreshments. Cost per player is $125.  Players can sign up to play and donations can be made at http://pointsforpatriots.eventbrite.com/.
