Congratulations to BK Sweeney’s first baseman Kevin Brosnan. He is the latest Over the Hill Gang Player of the Week. Brosnan blasted two homers and a double while driving in six runs during BK’s 22-7 win over Paradox Cafe. Paradox delivered Brosnan the ultimate compliment, intentionally walking him in the eighth inning.
The win lifts Sweeney’s record to a league-leading 13-1. Besides Brosnan, a long list of batters joined the hit parade. George Moerler with four RBIs; Mark Hemminger, Johnny Longo and Jim Hickey with three RBIs; Jim Felicia’s HR and three RBIs; and Byron Bodine, Jack DeBobes, George Cohan, Joey Girimonte and Mike Magro chipped in with two hits each. Outstanding pitching from Jim Hickey kept the hard-hitting Paradox team off stride for most the game.
Just another strong game in a season filled with a team effort put forward by each and every player week after week. Let’s not forget an original player Tom Fitzpatrick, retired this year, who comes down every week to keep score.
It was another hot Friday night, but luckily the sun was not a factor in the seven o’clock game between Barco Construction and Zwanger-Pesiri Radiology (ZP). Barco was looking to avenge an earlier season loss and it looked like that would take place when Barco scored five runs in the top of the first. However, ZP came right back and took the lead by scoring seven runs in the bottom of the inning. It looked like it was going to be one of those back and forth games. Barco only had 10 men for this game. Barco sent 10 men up in the first inning, eight men up in the second, third, and fourth innings, and 10 men up again in the fifth and seventh innings.
Barco’s defense held ZP to only three runs the rest of the way while scoring runs in all but one inning for a final score of 29-10. There were a lot of hits this night, highlighted by Gary Jambor five-for-six, Terry McPartland five-for-six, and Dennis Ryan five-for-six, who also hit for the cycle. Everyone contributed up and down the lineup.
The Over the Hill Gang also held a fundraiser to benefit the family of Jimmy Ossenfort on Friday, Aug. 3. Ossenfort was involved in a serious car accident after driving his friends home. He was the designated driver. OTHG had a successful event and was honored to help a local family in need.
