Local Runners, Walkers Invited To NS-LIJ 5-K, 1-K Run/Walks

Hofstra campus hosts run on Saturday, September 6

A new running and walking tradition will be coming to the Hofstra campus on Saturday morning, Sept. 8, as nearly 500 runners, walkers, and wheelchair athletes are expected to join in the fun for the inaugural North Shore-LIJ Orthopaedic (NS-LIJ) Journey 5K and 1K hosted by NS-LIJ’s Orthopaedic Institute.

The athletes will gather at the Hofstra NS-LIJ School of Medicine on Hofstra’s North Campus on the morning of Sept. 8, with the starting horn for the 1K sounding at 8:30 a.m., and the starting horn for the 5K sounding at 9 a.m.

Packet pickup and registration will be available at The Runner’s Edge in Farmingdale from noon to 5 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 7, and at the medical school between 7 a.m. and 8:15 a.m. on the morning of the event.

The event is being hosted by the NS-LIJ OI, with the institute’s vice president Nina DePaola, along with Jessica Mabie and Jaime Stephens, serving as the liaisons for the institute.

Race management chores are being handled by the Greater Long Island Running Club (GLIRC), with Linda Ottaviano and Mike Polansky serving as the event GLIRC co-directors.

Timing and scoring chores will be handled by JMS Racing services, utilizing the RFID Timing system with the computer chip built right into the bib number.  Results will be available within 24 hours at glirc.org and pigmantri.com.

Entry fees are only $20 for those who register in advance, and only $15 for preregistered Hofstra students or North Shore-LIJ employees.  Day of race entry is $25.  You can register online at glirc.org.

Every entrant will receive a high quality “technical” shirt commemorating the inaugural event, plus outstanding post-run/walk refreshments, and will be eligible for the great collection of door prizes that will be presented to randomly selected entrants at the award ceremony.

The 5-kilometer run/walk awards will be presented to the top male and female finishers overall, the top male and female NS- LIJ employees, to the top wheelchair finishers, and to the top three male and female finishers in five year age groups starting at 14 and under and running through 85 plus.

The NS-LIJ OI specializes in multidisciplinary orthopaedic care for the entire spectrum of musculoskeletal disorders with the goal of helping patients regain mobility and return to active independent lives. For more information about the institute, visit nslij.com/ortho.

In addition to the orthopaedic institute, other valuable sponsors of the event include Xerox, Equinox Fitness, Vicom, STARS (Sports Therapy And Rehabilitation Services), and The Runner’s Edge running and multisport specialty store in Farmingdale.
