Village prepares for upcoming holiday season
Caped crusaders, witches, ghosts and goblins will once again take over the residential streets of Stewart Manor on Saturday, Oct. 27, when the village hosts its annual Halloween parade. The parade steps off at 10:30 a.m. on Dover Parkway at Salisbury Avenue, proceeds south on Dover to Cambridge Avenue, turns right at Cambridge and heads west to Bromleigh Road, turns right at Bromleigh and heads north back to Salisbury.
The parade marks the unofficial kick-off to the holiday season. Members of the village’s beautification committee have already been busy planning how they will help spread holiday cheer. For the fall, the committee plans to plant mums and kale in the pots that line Covert Avenue.
“Kale lasts longer into the season, so we’re going to do more of those because they will have more of a lasting impact,” said committee member Trish Lynch.
The pots will complement the lampposts that dot Covert Avenue on both sides of the street. Covert Avenue Chamber of Commerce president Cathy Grassman adorned the lampposts with corn stalks and autumn bows earlier in the season.
Looking ahead, “We’re excited about the new Christmas wreaths that we got for all the poles going down Covert on both sides,” which was a joint expenditure with Floral Park, Lynch said. “We got both villages to come together. We’re really excited because now we’re going to have matching wreaths.”
Additionally, both villages are looking into skylines to coordinate with the wreaths. “It’s an ongoing collaboration with Floral Park,” Lynch said.
The beautification committee also had a hand in launching the annual Stewart Manor Christmas tree lighting. Nearly 20 years ago, the committee worked with the Stewart Manor Lions Club to create a tradition that continues to pick up steam each year.
This year, the lighting will take place on Saturday, Dec. 1. The municipal parking lot on the Corner of Chester and Covert Avenues will be closed as will Chester Road from Covert to Dover Parkway.
The village, Covert Avenue Chamber of Commerce and Lions Club will once again rent a horse and buggy. Residents will be invited to go for a ride along Chester Road. In the past, either a $2 donation to the Lions Club or a toy for Toys for Tots has been asked in return for a buggy ride.
Once the tree is lit, the holiday season in Stewart Manor will be in full swing. Residents are urged to save the date for the annual village holiday party, which will be held at the Stewart Manor Country Club on Friday, Dec. 14.
