Editorial: Back To The Ice For The NHL

On Jan. 19, the NHL returns to action after a 113-day strike. While hockey fans simultaneously lamented and shook their fists over the greed of millionaires and owners, the sport continued to reverberate on the local level.
As bars, restaurants and other merchants that line Hempstead Turnpike were dealing with lower profits this year compared to last, concession workers who normally peddled wares during Islanders games were drawing unemployment. Meanwhile, Nassau Coliseum’s main tenant, thr Islanders, announced that they would be moving west to Brooklyn in 2015. And while numerous Garden City fans may have been just as miserable as their brethren across North America, the one piece of silver lining in all of this was the announcement that the village’s newly renovated roller hockey rink would be ready for unveiling later in 2013.
