Getting Off On A Good Foot

The Garden City girls varsity basketball team is off to a fast start in Nassau Conference I-A. The Lady Trojans have put together a 5-1 conference record while going 8-3 overall on the hardwood court. Approaching the midpoint of the season the girls have been able to consistently outscore their opponents by hitting their outside shots and working tirelessly on the offensive boards for second and third scoring chances.

Coach Anthony Sparacia has his girls moving the ball around the perimeter quickly, setting up for the open shot, which more often than not has been from three point range. And the girls are responding with some terrific early season shooting.  Defensively, Sparacia likes to keep the pressure on his opponents and the Garden City girls are getting very proficient at pressing the ball and causing turnovers.

Leading the team from the outside are shooting guard Sam Auricchio with a smooth jumper from anywhere on the court, along with guards Tara DeAngelo and Becky Reifler. The strong inside game of Taylor Carpentier, both working the boards and taking the ball to the hoop, helps to keep opposing teams off balance. And when you add in the talents of Kerry McCarraher, Michaela Bruno and Sam Sessa, you have a well-rounded team that has defeated their last two opponents by scores of 67-19 and 42-23.
