During the Feb. 13 gathering, the board covered its usual range of topics, while also taking the time to honor the work of Levittown PTA members and presidents during a brief reception and awards ceremony.
Levittown resident Mike Scully inspired the discussion on school security during a passionate speech in which he urged the district to install panic buttons in classrooms. Though the subject came as no surprise, the responses were interesting.
After confirming that Levittown schools already had a system in place that gave every classroom access to the intercom, President Michael Pappas endorsed a message of “slowing the perpetrators down” in case of an emergency. New funds for increased security measures within the district were scheduled to be reviewed just days following the public board meeting.
The mood lightened as student liaisons representing Division and MacArthur high schools provided recent standout news from their respective schools. Financial and other perfunctory issues capped the night.
The next Levittown School District Board of Education meeting will be held on Wednesday, March 13 at the Levittown Memorial Education Center at 150 Abbey Lane. The public session begins at 7:30 p.m.
The second budget discussion will be held on Wednesday, March 20 at 7:30 p.m.
