Huntington
What would you, my reader, do if you lived in Jericho, Nassau County and you wished to meet and eat with a dear old friend on a Sunday afternoon; a friend who recently moved further out on the Island, in Suffolk County.
The answer is obvious: Select a spot in the heart of downtown Huntington and have your meeting there. My beautiful wife Lorraine and our friend Marilyn decided to meet at The Book Revue in downtown Huntington. I remember the bookstore because I read a few chapters from my book, Over 60 and Getting Younger there several years ago.
I on the other hand wanted to watch the game between the New York Knicks and the Miami Heat. I chose an Irish Bar called Finnegan’s to sit and view the game. Finnegan’s was established in 1941 by a gent called Finnegan. He was an immigrant teetotaler, but ordained this great spot.
On entering Finnegan’s, I found a seat at the bar and saw the most beautiful and scenic Bloody Mary being imbibed by a bar patron on my right side. I ordered a Bloody Mary and was not disappointed. It was tangy, tart and well seasoned. From the bartender, I learned that the glorious taste was due to the horseradish generously sprinkled in the glass with a lime sitting on top. Ah, heaven! The Knicks lost to the Heat because of that evil character from Miami, a.k.a. Lebron James.
After the game, Lorraine, Marilyn and I met at a Mediterranean restaurant on New York Avenue called Skorpios. The Greek fish ordered was delectable, and so was the baklava for dessert.
On past visits to Huntington, we have frequently gone to The Huntington Cinema for interesting films from avant-garde directors from all over the globe. The Heckscher Museum also offers special exhibitions and a permanent collection of art.
I remember that for my son Adam’s bar mitzvah, I bought my entire outfit from Marsh’s, an excellent haberdashery store on Main Street. Yes, Huntington is a wonderful spot to visit for food, drink, intellectual pursuits and meeting old friends.
