Needs Assessment Survey Mailings Continue                            

Mailings are ongoing to all village residents for the Community wide Recreation and Parks Needs Assessment survey.

This is your opportunity to express your individual needs, attitudes, opinions and behaviors toward village leisure services and facilities.

When you receive your questionnaire, complete it and return it to the consulting firm in the envelope provided. Note: space has been provided for write in comments. Feel free to use these areas to express other specific concerns or recommendations.

Over 35 Softball Applications Available

Registration packets are available for joining the recreation department’s over 35 Men’s softball league. This league is played on Sunday evenings beginning late May and continuing throughout the summer. Players must be 35 years old or older by the start of the league and residents of the Inc. Village of Garden City. To pick up a packet, please visit the recreation department’s office at 108 Rockaway Ave. All packets must be returned by May14 in order to be considered.

Want To Play Some Softball?

If you are a resident of the Inc. Village of Garden City, age 18 or over, who would like to play softball in one of the recreation department’s softball leagues, call the recreation office at 516-465-4075 to put your name on the “player list.” Coaches sometimes call looking for extra players to round out their rosters. Call and leave your name, age, address, and phone number and your name will be kept on file for a team looking for extra players.

Girls’ Volleyball Camp

This camp will provide instruction in skills necessary to compete in the sport of volleyball. The children will learn proper techniques in serving, hitting, and passing and well as the aspects of the game. This camp will be held in St. Paul’s Field House and is open to any resident of the Village of Garden City who is entering grades 6-10 in September.

When:  July 8-11    

Time: 9–11:30 a.m.

Where: St. Paul’s Field House

Cost: $100

USSI Field Hockey Camp

US Sports Institute will conduct a Summer Field Hockey Camp for girls ages 9-13 that are residents of the Village of Garden City. Campers will be taken through all phases of the game, thoughtfully integrating technical and tactical components in a fun, innovative way. The camp will focus on individual skill development and the rules of the game, as well as the importance of playing together as a team.  Players will be grouped by age, playing ability and experience level. No previous experience playing field hockey is required to attend the First Play Field Hockey Camp. Equipment will be supplied.

When: Week of July 22–25; Week of Aug. 19-22

Where: St. Paul’s Field

Time: 9:30–12:30 p.m.  

Cost: $130 each week, check made payable to US Sports Institute

A special application is necessary for any US Sports Institute camp and checks must be made payable to US Sports Institute. You may also register online for any US Sports Institute Camp at www.ussportsinstitute.com.

Softball Camp

This softball camp will teach young aspiring players entering grades 3 through 7 the basic skills of softball. Every aspect of the game will be covered including hitting, fielding, base running, pitching, and more. Team play will be emphasized. The goal of this camp is for young athletes to improve their over all self confidence and knowledge of the game.

When: July 8-11

Time: 3–5 p.m.

Where: Community Park softball fields Cost: $75

Bricks4Kidz – A Lego Camp Experience

Children ages 5–8 will sample models from over two dozen different themes such as Super Hero Academy, Amusement Park, Mindstorm Robotics and Space Adventures. They will be encouraged and challenged to innovate and invent their own models or customize existing models to express their individual creativity. Children will be broken into groups by and age and building skill ability.

When: Aug. 12–15

Time: 9–11:30 a.m. Where: TBD

Cost: $165

Connecting With Nature…

Camp That Explores The Living Things Around Us

The Recreation Department and the Garden City Bird Sanctuary are joint venturing to offer a camp experience “Connecting with Nature”. Children ages 6-12 are invited to spend the morning at the Garden City Bird Sanctuary learning about how they can work hand-in-hand with nature. This one-week, two-hour program will meet at Nassau Haven Park and then move into the sanctuary, with walks, crafts, and take homes for each child involved.

When: Week of July 8–11, Ages 6-8

Week of July 15–18, Ages 9-12

Week of July 22-25

Where: Nassau Haven and the Bird Sanctuary

Time: 10 a.m. to noon Fee: $60
