With the Taste of the Town still a warm glow of recent memory, the PTSA is already putting the funds raised to good use.
On June 5, the PTSA sponsored the UNITE Arrive Alive Tour to come to Oyster Bay High School. When students came to school that morning they were greeted with a car parked right outside the main entrance to the high school. Students were invited to sit in the car as a simulator approximated driving. Students were then given a cell phone and asked to text a message. Other students could watch a screen and see how erratic and dangerous driving becomes when drivers attempt to compose a seemingly simple text.
The young drivers were given citations showing all the driving infractions and hazards they faced while texting.
UNITE is one of the top health and wellness organizations in the nation. They visit campuses on all levels from elementary all of the way to colleges and above. Their programs are designed to heighten awareness to the dangers and consequences of driving while impaired. UNITE is committed to impacting the entire community with positive messages that will last a lifetime. UNITE’s creed states, “There is an old adage that says ‘an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.’ We want to be that “ounce of prevention” before the cure is needed.”
Anna Kooiman of Fox News showed up with a film crew and spent several hours interviewing students for a future broadcast. Kooiman is a statuesque beauty with a charming personality that was not lost on many of the students. Senior Pablo Rodriguez ended his interview segment with a question of his own. He asked Kooiman if she would be his date to the prom. She said yes. Kooiman is schedule to be on assignment that week and the producers are going to try to free her up to attend the OBHS Prom.
With ever increasing state mandates that force school districts to cut budgets to the bone, the importance of a strong and active PTA is essential to make sure students continue to get a well-rounded education. Issues of safety and character are targeted by the PTAs in the many cultural arts programs they sponsor.
The key component to the PTA is parents. It is vital that parents get involved in the education of their children. The PTA is asking parents to step up and pitch in.
Make a difference in your child’s education. Join the PTSA (for students in grades seven through 12) or the OBEN Elementary PTA (for students in grades pre-k through six).
