Two hundred gallons of diesel fuel being delivered to the Bay Park Sewage Treatment Plant to operate temporary generators powering the plant spilled early Wednesday morning, officials said.

The spill occurred when a pressurized delivery hose connected to a delivery truck blew off, according to the New York Department of Environmental Conservation, which was alerted to the spill around 3:30 a.m.

The fuel spilled onto a paved surface that led to a storm drain on Compton Street, officials said. Crews utilized a vacuum truck to suck up fuel that had entered the storm drain.

“The spill was cleaned and there was zero impact to the local waterways,” said Nassau County Department of Public Works spokesman Michael Martino.

“Measures have been put in place immediately to ensure this type of ever does not occur again,” he added. “This is just another reason the county Democrats must stop playing games with County Executive Mangano’s plan to fully repair the plant.”

The spill comes amid heated debate between Democrats and Republicans in the county legislature regarding $722 million in borrowing requested by County Executive Ed Mangano to repair Hurricane Sandy-related damages to the plant, which failed during the Oct. 29 superstorm.

Democrats have argued for more oversight over the project because of its hefty price tag.

Lawmakers, however, did approve $262 million for repairs in July.

The legislature is expected to take up the issue again on Monday.

The plant experienced a catastrophic failure when Sandy struck the region almost one year ago, flooding local waterways and homes with raw sewage. The plant was off-line for more than a month after the storm.
