Denton Students Learn to Code

Denton Avenue students from kindergarten to fifth grade visited the Denton Computer Lab to learn programming skills from computer teacher Christine Southard. She chose a variety of activities for the students to learn about writing computer code.

Denton kindergarteners explored the LightBot app, a game used to teach basic coding concepts. Third, fourth and fifth graders learned the basic concepts of computer science by participating in a drag and drop programming class at code.org.

This game-like, self-directed tutorial on coding included video lectures by Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg and used characters from apps like Angry Birds and Plants vs. Zombies to teach coding concepts. The students learned about repeatloops, conditionals, and basic algorithms.
