Day In Clay Program

Earlier this March, fifth grade students of Northside Elementary had the opportunity to observe the work of professional artist Cliff Mendelson. Artist-in-Residence Mendelson shared his expertise and talent as he demonstrated the art of creating clay masks by hand, showing students that an artist creating original works in an atmosphere that encouraged their inquiry and involvement.  Conversation and dialogue were an integral part of the creative process.

Students then created their own individual ceramic masks using the style and techniques of African artists.  They enjoyed learning about the process involved in creating ceramic pieces and gained an appreciation for cultures that are unfamiliar to them. The various symbols, patterns and imagery were utilized in their own works to explore this tradition. The program was sponsored by the Northside PTA Cultural Arts Committee.
