The Chancel Choir and soloists of The Congregational Church of Manhasset, with organ and strings, are proud to present the east coast premiere of the Mass in D minor S.67 by the little-known Austrian composer, J.N. Hummel (1778-1837).
Written in 1805 and one of several masses by Hummel, it contains superb orchestration, memorable melodies, and demonstrates the wonderful choral music considered by many to be the composer’s best genre. The music reflects the transition from the Classical to the Romantic musical era. This will be the third performance of the Mass.
The work premiered in the UK and a second performance was in California. Additional pieces included in the concert are Exsulate, jubilate, K. 165 by W.A. Mozart and G.F. Handel’s Organ Concerto Op. 4 No. 2 in B-flat Major, played by organist, Judith Feuss.
The concert is under the direction of Craig Tocher and will feature the church’s AEolian-Skinner pipe organ built in 1960 and recently upgraded to a four manual, 72 rank pipe organ with additional three digital ranks, making it one of the finest pipe organs in the greater New York area.
The concert will be held in the sanctuary of the church on Sunday, April 13 at 3 p.m., followed by a reception in the Parish Hall. The Congregational Church of Manhasset is located at 1845 Northern Boulevard in Manhasset. Call 627-4911 for more information or visit www.uccmanhasset.org.
