A 47-year-old Port Jefferson man was found dead in upstate New York a day after he was reported missing this week, Suffolk County police said.

Daniel Schechter was reported missing from his Cooper Court home on Tuesday and found dead on Slide Mountain in Shandaken on Wednesday, police said.

He had turned off his cell phone in the area of Woodstock several hours after he went missing, police had said when they issued a missing persons alert.

Authorities had said he was believed to be suicidal, but Suffolk police said New York State Police are now investigating.
