Last March, Roslyn High School students Daniel Chai, Rachel Mintz, and Spencer Shores qualified at the Long Island Science Congress to compete in the New York State Science Congress.
At the state congress, held recently at Brookhaven National Laboratories, Mintz took High Honors, while Shore and Chai achieved Honorable Mention status.
At the Long Island level fair, Mintz, a junior, looked at the role of magnesium in abating the potential side effects of a cancer drug called cisplatin. She did her work at the Feinstein Institute over the summer of 2013. For that project, Mintz earned Highest Honors and was the recipient of the Long Island Science Education Leadership Association Award.
Chai and Shores, sophomores, worked as a team to look at how people assimilate pieces of information that have both positive and negative aspects. Chai and Shores were awarded Highest Honors in addition to the Anna Weizenecker Memorial Award, the Long Island Science Congress Award, and the Award for the Most Distinguished Project in the category of Behavioral Science.
