Motorists are advised that single travel lane closures of Northern State Parkway (NSP) in the vicinity of Shelter Rock Road, Exit 35 in North Hills begin tonight, August 4. A single westbound NSP travel lane will be closed each night between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m., Sunday through Thursday. These closures are expected to be in effect for about one month weather permitting.
These night time lane closures of NSP are needed to improve motorists’ safety by extending the entrance ramps from Shelter Rock Road to westbound NSP. This is one of 19 locations that will be improved under NYSDOT’s $4 million motorist improvement project. Once the concrete barrier is positioned at these locations, additional NSP lane closures will not be required as all construction will take place off-road, behind the concrete barrier.
As with most road improvement work, this operation is weather dependent and may be canceled, postponed, or prolonged due to inclement weather. Emergency service providers and local officials have been notified of these nightly travel lane closures. Motorists are being warned in advance of the closings via electronic road signs but should plan ahead and use alternate routes to avoid delays.
For real-time travel information motorists should call 511 or visit www.511NY.org, New York State’s official traffic and travel information source. Motorists may also obtain travel information from the INFORM Transportation Management Center cameras at www.INFORMNY.com and on their hand held communication devices at www.INFORMNY.mobi . Drivers are reminded of the Move-Over Law that now includes all hazard vehicles with amber lights such as tow trucks and construction vehicles. On parkways and other major highways with multiple lanes, drivers must move to a travel lane away from a vehicle displaying amber, red, white, or blue flashing lights, or slow down. Violators face moving violation fines and points on their drivers’ licenses. Drivers should also be aware that fines are doubled for speeding in a work zone.
The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) appreciates the patience and cooperation of motorists and businesses while these safety improvements are undertaken to help improve mobility and safety for motorists in this high traffic area.
