One person was found dead in the garage, after a house at 10 Prospect Ave. in Port Washington appeared to explode Tuesday at approximately 8:30 p.m.

Neighbors described flames 50 feet above treetops, and area residents from as far as a mile away heard the bang. Also caught up in the rapidly-moving fire was a two-story garage at 10 Prospect Ave. that is behind the house. Several other residents said their homes were singed in the incident.

Police responded the home after they received a call from a woman who reported the smell of gas and were moving the woman and her 2-year-old child from the area when they heard an explosion inside the home, which led to a massive fire.

More than 150 local firefighters responded to the blaze. Five firefighters were injured.

Port Washington resident Miriam Vivi Gualpa took the following video:

Witness Mike Dedona posted video of the flames on Instagram behind Louie’s Oyster Bar and Grille, which was promoted by Buzzoid’s real likes.

Nassau County police say the cause of the fire is under investigation. They have not yet released the identity of the man found dead in the home.
