New Garden City Merchant Banners Displayed

Chamber drives initiative to shop locally

The Garden City Chamber of Commerce announced the installation of Shop Garden City banners bearing the Garden City Pineapple on several light poles on Seventh Street, lower Franklin Avenue and New Hyde Park Road. The Chamber initiated this project at the suggestion of Dennis Donnelly, village trustee liaison officer to the business community. The aim is to encourage potential customers to keep their dollars in Garden City’s community shopping area known as the T-Zone (Seventh Street and Franklin Avenue between the LIRR tracks and Stewart Avenue). A banner has also been placed in front of the Garden City Hotel to draw visitors to the downtown shops.

The banners have replaced the Friday Night Promenade banners which had been placed on the light poles throughout the summer and the Belmont Festival banners which are placed during the spring months.

“We had a budget for this year, but looking toward the future, we would like to find the means to extend the project to include more on both Seventh Street, Franklin Avenue and New Hyde Park Road,” noted Immediate Past President of the Chamber Roger Eltringham. Chamber Executive Director Althea Robinson said that Shop Local banners will also be placed on the village’s 14 kiosks, a project sponsored by County Executive Ed Mangano and the Nassau Council of Chambers of Commerce, of which the Chamber is a charter member.
