Stony Brook University Student Dies of Suicide, Cops Say

Stony Brook University

A Stony Brook University student died of an apparent suicide after falling to his death from a campus dormitory on Tuesday afternoon, Suffolk County police said.

The undergraduate student, who was not identified, was found unresponsive in the vicinity of Stimson College in Roosevelt Squad, according to an email sent by Stony Brook University President Samuel L. Stanley Jr. to the campus community. The student was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, he said.

“I am deeply saddened to report that a tragic occurrence took place on our campus this afternoon,” Stanley said in the email. “The student’s family has been notified and I cannot begin to imagine their sense of loss.”

Suffolk County police Homicide Squad detectives are investigating the incident along with university police. Authorities believe no criminality was involved, Suffolk police said.

Campus police sent an email alert to students and faculty at 2:30 p.m., saying it was investigating a “medical emergency” involving a student who fell.

“As a campus, our hearts and prayers go out to them in their time of mourning,” Stanley said in the email. “I also offer condolences to friends and faculty who knew and cared for this student.”

The university said resources were being made available immediately to help the grieving campus.

“Losing a member of our campus community to such an unexpected and tragic circumstance is difficult,” Stanley continued, “and we know it is particularly so for those who are invested in the person’s academic experience, success and personal development.”
