Plainview Resident Publishes New Book On NYPD

Dr. John Eterno, Associate Dean and professor of Molloy College’s department of criminal justice, recently published a new book entitled The New York City Police Department: The Impact of the Policies and Practices.

Published by CRC Press, the book features research and analysis from former members of the NYPD and academic specialists, as well as chapters from Eterno himself. Eterno conceived of the project, worked with the writers to further develop their topics and then edited the entire book.

This academic book includes analysis of such issues as stop-and-frisk policies in Brooklyn, marijuana arrest polices and the NYPD’s development and implementation of innovative technology. The book also explores critical questions such as how does the community view the NYPD? How does the NYPD handle mass demonstrations? Does the NYPD manipulate crime reports to make them appear better?

“Bringing together so many talented researchers for a book on the NYPD is unique,” said Eterno, who served 21 years with the NYPD and retired as a captain. “It is also challenging to study the NYPD because, like many police forces, they are extremely protective of their data. My hope is that they will accept the analysis presented in this book as a way to help them improve.”

This is Eterno’s fourth book. He is best known for The Crime Numbers Game, published in 2012. He has two other books scheduled for publication in 2015: The Detective’s Handbook and Global Issues in Contemporary Policing.

The New York City Police Department: The Impact of the Policies and Practices is available at www.crcpress.com, and through Amazon and other book retailers.
