A Greenport man has been indicted on upgraded charges after allegedly driving drunk and crashing into a truck head on, killing a 31-year-old passenger in the second vehicle last month, authorities said.
John A. Costello will be arraigned Wednesday on charges of manslaughter, vehicular manslaughter and assault. He was initially arrested on a charge of driving while intoxicated.
Authorities have said that the 71-year-old suspect was driving drunk when he drove his pickup truck into the opposite lane of traffic, colliding with another vehicle on Dec. 6 on Route 25 in Greenport.
A passenger in the vehicle Costello allegedly struck, 31-year-old Miguel Bartolone of Peconic, died of his injuries at Stony Brook University Hospital.
Crime lab testing of blood showed Costello had a blood-alcohol level of 0.17 after the crash, prosecutors said.
