Wantagh firefighters cool down the area as Hicksville firefighters assist in burning off a 100 pound leaking propane cylinder.
The incident occurred Sunday afternoon, Feb. 8, when a Crescent Lane homeowner discovered the leak. He notified the Wantagh Fire Department and a general alarm was transmitted bringing all available firefighters to the scene.
Chief Jackowitz requested mutual aid from the Hicksville Fire Departments Haz-Mat Team for assistance in utilizing their burn-off kit. An additional engine from Seaford and a ladder from Levittown as the “Fast Truck” were also requested to the scene. Nassau Police shut down all traffic in the area as firefighters evacuated homes in the immediate area. Fire units from Massapequa, Bellmore and North Bellmore relocated into Wantagh’s Station 1 to provide protection to the fire district.
It took about an hour to burn off the gas and there were no injuries.
