What happens when a talented FACS teacher challenges her students to a full-scale competition designed to test the boundaries of sensory appeal? Anyone fortunate enough to have ventured into Mrs. Alahverdian’s room to view the incredible cakes knows the not-so-simple answer to that question: a spectacular confectionary feast for the eyes.
Following the guidelines for the Long Island Family and Consumer Science Cake Challenge, talented Island Trees culinary students designed their cakes based on specific criteria, including the representation of theme, artistic merit, degree of difficulty, and execution. Most importantly, however, each team had to work collaboratively to carry out their design.
The results were astounding, and the themes were both imaginative and visually pleasing. Whether students devised a cake that paid tribute to the army or celebrated in true mariachi style, they all succeeded in delighting their audience.
First place for this semester’s Cake Competition Showcase went to the retro Smurf cake (Smurf-er-ific), created by Alyssa Ramirez, Julia Springs, Kaitlyn McNeil, and Kimberly Raines. In second, third and fourth places were Minion, M&Ms, and Peacock, respectively.
