Sewanhaka Central High School District students showed off their athletic abilities, school spirit and camaraderie during the district’s 28th annual Sports Night held at H. Frank Carey High School.
The high-energy event, brought students from Elmont Memorial, Floral Park Memorial, H. Frank Carey, New Hyde Park Memorial and Sewanhaka together to compete in tugs-of-war, cage volleyball matches, relay races, a scavenger hunt and dance performance. The participating students were cheered on by their building administrators, teachers and classmates who were clad in their respective school colors.
In addition to the competing in the games, each school also created a poster based on this year’s theme energy conservation, prior to the event.
According to district Athletic Director Matt McLees, judges awarded points based on each team’s strength, speed, artistic and dance ability as well as athleticism.
New Hyde Park Memorial was awarded first place in the competition. The team received their trophy from Elmont Memorial Athletic Chairperson Peter Gaffney, who was honored for his 22 years of service to the district at the event. Gaffney retired at the end of February.
