The Mineola Memorial Library is currently operational, but restoration is continuing after a water pipe burst during the February cold snap. The pipe flooded administrative offices, much of the advanced book section and ground floor auditorium. The children’s section was unaffected.
“We’re up and running,” Library Director Charles Sleefe said. “We’re hoping that by the end of March, everything will be done.”
The library reopened on Feb. 23. Sleefe said most programs have been canceled because the auditorium is still being carpeted.
Staff members are currently assisting library patrons in getting books near closed off areas. Sleefe’s office is still closed, officials said. The pipe froze against the brick wall inside his closet before it burst. Staff rooms are also out of commission at this time.
“It’s still being refurbished,” he said. “I was concerned for the collections and videos. Luckily, the water didn’t make it that far. Getting the auditorium ready for our programs is important.”
Sleefe said ceiling tiles are currently being replaced. Carpet replacement is on the horizon as well.
“The video section is open and the children’s room,” he said. “The fiction and nonfiction [sections] aren’t ready. We just have to get the book for them because the floors aren’t ready.”
Mineola Village DPW crews ripped up the soiled carpets, deployed air scrubbers to prevent mold and used industrial disinfectant to combat pollution during the February cleanup.
“It’s progressing as fast as it can,” Mayor Scott Strauss said. “The carpet is on order. We took preventative measures so this doesn’t happen again. We’re looking to get back to full operation of the library.”
