Island Trees High School recently hosted a “Texting Awareness” assembly for all juniors and seniors. Legislator Dennis Dunne spoke to the students about how important it is to be completely focused on the road while driving and brought with him Karen Torres from the Texting Awareness Foundation to talk to the students about distracted driving.
Distracted driving includes anything that takes your eyes off the road including texting, talking on the phone, eating or drinking, reading or even talking to passengers. Torres shared many stories about people who have lost their lives due to distracted driving, including her own father.
Each year, more than 3,000 people are killed in an accident caused by distracted driving. Those are deaths that can easily be prevented. Students took away with them some very valuable information, as well as a pledge handed out by local All State representatives. It is the school’s hope that all students who attended the assembly will take the pledge to be distraction free while driving.
Special thanks to Legislator Dunne for bringing this program to the school and to Karen Torres for sharing her story.
